If you wear makeup… you have makeup brushes. And, when was the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes? I know… you are probably thinking, I just cleaned them, I’m good. Even though that was months ago!
Makeup Grows Bacteria
A study published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology by researchers in the U.K. found that 9 out of 10 products tested contained bacteria. The same bacteria that are capable of causing illnesses such as skin, eye, and mouth infections, even blood poisoning! YIKES!!
The researchers looked at a variety of makeup products, including blending sponges and makeup brushes. Sponges were found to have the highest levels of potentially harmful bacteria, probably because they were left damp and in your makeup bag or drawers. And we know how damp stuff grows the most bacteria.
The study also showed that two-thirds of users had dropped their sponges and brushes on the floor at some point. The study included that 93% of sponges and brushes were never cleaned at all! Ewwwww.
How Often You Should Clean Your Brushes
Now think about applying those sponges and brushes to your face. As a makeup artist, my brushes were cleaned and sterilized every night and before each new client. And your brushes should be no different.
Ok… I know it’s not the easiest to clean them every day. But At least once a week to 2 times a week. Enough to nip in the bud before you have a bacteria playground.
Cleaning Your Brushes
Now that I’ve probably grossed you out, cleaning your brushes nightly might become higher on your list…ok maybe at least weekly.
Every night when you are washing your face, grab the brushes you used that day. And this is super easy… take dawn dish soap and put a little on one palm of your hand, add a little water and rub your brush on your palm.
Rinse the brush out well. Then layout to dry… ready for the next day. You can always tell if your brushes are clean by rubbing them on either tissue paper or something white to see if they still have makeup in them.
As Soft As The Dawn
You don’t have to go buy some fancy-schmancy brush cleaner. Dawn soap is antibacterial and is soft on your brushes. They use dawn to clean those poor birds and animals when there’s an oil spill. So, if it’s soft on them, it’s perfect for your brushes. And the more you clean them, the longer they will last you. We all know makeup brushes aren’t cheap!
Little Something Extra For You
Ok so this little guy won’t remove bacteria but it will clean your brush between colors. I love this Dry Makeup Brush Quick Cleaner Sponge when I’m changing eye shadow colors and want to use the same brush during the application, this product comes in handy. I don’t use it for clients… it’s just for my own personal use. Rub your brush on this sponge and it takes all the color out of it. But don’t forget… clean this sponge when you clean your brushes too!
