TIPS ON CHOOSING A MAKEUP ARTIST FOR YOUR WEDDING

Whether you are getting married, doing a photoshoot, or going to an important event, finding the right makeup artist is VERY important. These tips, along with my 4 Questions To Ask When Hiring A Makeup Artist, are geared towards weddings but are useful for any event.

How To Contact A Makeup Artist

Most of my clients came from word of mouth. That’s the best way to find a Makeup Artist. Ask around… you have had friends who have gotten married. Did they use a Makeup Artist? Nowadays… they probably did or had friends who used a Makeup Artist for their own event. Ask!

I went to bridal bizarres to put my name out there as well. These events are great because you can interview your artist more in-depth, especially if it’s for your wedding. It’s a job… you have every right to interview them.

What Not To Do

I wouldn’t recommend going to a makeup counter and getting your makeup done there. A lot of times a Makeup Artist’s prices will run the same as if they come to you vs you going to a counter (or store). When going to a makeup counter, the price will be dependent on their service and you buying their products. Wouldn’t you rather relax in your hotel room and have someone come to you for about the same price?

Oh, and you can negotiate prices. This is great because if you have a big party, they might do an overall price.

At a counter, they usually use only one makeup product line, which they have been trained on, and most likely know how to do certain ‘looks’ they were taught. They don’t necessarily branch out from a type of look that doesn’t always meet your needs.

Choosing A Makeup Artist

Remember… this is your event and the money you are spending. Shop around for a Makeup Artist. They can make or break your whole look. Hair is important, but if your face doesn’t look blended, refreshed, and effortless, your guests will notice, and worse of all your pictures will show every flaw.

Booking The Artist

One time I booked a bride, I was the 5th artist she had done a trial run with! I got the job because, I came prepared, listened to what she wanted and I had the experience to be able to do 10 other women from her wedding party. Boy, and did I have to work fast!

Schedule a trial run, which I always offered free of charge. And don’t hesitate to reach out to your Makeup Artist and show him/her your looks and ideas you might want, or just to even touch base that everything is still running smoothly.

I can’t stress enough, that you are hiring this artist for an important day for you. You want professionalism and an artist who’s going to make you look like a million bucks. Choose wisely!
