HOW FASTING IS GREAT FOR LOSING WEIGHT AND MORE
What does insulin sensitivity mean?
High Insulin
When you eat food your body breaks those foods down into their simplest forms. Such as, carbs get broken down into simple sugars, and protein into amino acids. Then your body recognizes these sugars and amino acids in your system and sends out insulin. Fats are the one macronutrients that don’t trigger your insulin.
All foods raise your insulin to some degree (except pure fats), refined carbohydrates release the most insulin though.
The more you eat the more insulin is released and begins to circulate in your blood. While your cells are stuff full, insulin can no longer put anything more into them, and insulin and glucose remain in your blood. You then become what they call ‘insulin resistant or sensitive.
With continually high insulin secretion, studies have shown its link to
- Heart Disease
- Stroke
- Alzheimer’s Disease
- High Cholesterol
- High Blood Pressure
- Obesity
- Fatty Liver Disease
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
- Gout
- Sleep Apnea
- Cancer
So you can see why you want to try and keep your insulin low as much as possible. The most effective way to keep your insulin low is to avoid food altogether. This is where fasting comes in.

Stuffing Your Cells With Fat
I was taught in college, that fasting was bad because it starts breaking down your muscles. This is true, but you have to go through your energy sources before it starts doing that.
Here’s a good way to understand how foods affect our bodies:
Back To Basics… What Is A Macro-nutrient?

If you carry any extra weight on your body, then you can fast. When you fast, your body first burns glucose, when it has burned all your glucose reservoir it then starts burning fat stores.
When you have gone through all of your fat then it begins to burn muscle. This isn’t going to happen if you are storing plenty of fat for your body to burn. That is why fasting is perfectly safe unless you are already malnourished.
Benefits of Fasting
Fasting can be done in so many different ways and tailored to your own body’s needs. This could be eating only breakfast and lunch or skipping every other day or even a week-long fast.
The more your body goes without food the more you can burn stored sugars and body fat. Fasting is great for losing weight but there are so many other amazing health benefits from going without food for a period of time.
