It’s Time To For Breast Implant Illness To Be Recognized
Now that you have been diagnosed with Breast Implant Illness, you want your implants out. But how can you afford an explant?
Like many women who have become sick from their implants, you have probably have spent a small fortune on medical bills just trying to find out what’s going on with your body. Then when you decide I need them out, it’s so expensive.
Paying For An Explant
You can pay for the implant removal out of pocket, which I’m sure you don’t have an extra $8-15k. That’s depending on which state you live in and how invasive capsule removal is for you.
Or you can try and have your insurance pay for your explant… which is extremely hard, but not impossible. In my case it’s not so much the insurance companies that are difficult to work with, it’s the surgeons who are on your plan.
Insurance Companies
I was given the option of 6 surgeons through my insurance. As I began calling each one of them to get information, 2 told me they were no longer taking my insurance and one told me they don’t take my plan. Which was not the case. So my insurance had to call them up and let them know that they did…ugh! That was all around a terrible experience.
This is important to know if you are going to see about getting your implants removed
Legislature
So far my insurance company has been great. Working really close with me and giving me the code for what procedures they do cover. I wish I could say the same about the doctor I visited. And maybe that’s because they don’t have the appropriate codes to explant.
As of now, Breast Implant Illness is not recognized as a ‘real’ medical condition. Many women are fighting to have legislation on breast implants and some have been successful on the state level. Their efforts have gone as far as having warning labels on the implants and having patients sign documents acknowledging they could get sick from implants.
Which is a huge leap from those women who have been fighting a very difficult battle. But the problem is, what about women who have implants in now and are very sick.
No Codes For BII
Since they say that BII can’t be proven there is no medical coding for explantation. What that means is you go to your doctor they report back to the insurance company with a code, showing your diagnostic and procedures you need to be done. But as of now, there is no code that states you have Breast Implant Illness and need your implants removed. That’s because, in their eyes, it doesn’t ‘exist’.
So as women go in to see their doctors and tell them their symptoms, the doctor has no code to use and therefore can not help these suffering women. And if they don’t have a code, they don’t get paid through the insurance company. So it’s a vicious circle!
Saving Time and Money
This simple diagnostic code, will not only validate those of us suffering from breast implant illness but will also save so much time and money for many out there still searching for the reasons they are so sick!
So in the meantime… here is what I have been doing and some advice I’ve been given.
