8 THINGS TO DO BEFORE GOING TO BED

Each night I have a ritual before I go to bed. I wish I could just flop down in bed… but usually, when I do and decide to skip my ritual, I find myself getting back up out of bed and doing them. That’s because they are so important for my body’s health.

After doing these things every night for over a year, I have noticed huge overall health improvements. These do take a little bit of time to do each night but are worth it when it comes to aging and oral health. I highly suggest adding these into your own night regiment if you don’t already.

1. Flossing

Start off with flossing to make sure you get the food out from in between your teeth. It’s just not enough to brush alone, brushing is just cleaning the teeth. Flossing gets where your brush can’t go and prevents plaque buildup, which can lead to cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease.

2. Waterpik

So you are thinking, well I flossed why do I need to use a Waterpik as well? A Waterpik is not a replacement for flossing, it should be paired with flossing. Flossing gets the big food stuck in between your teeth and colonies of bacteria in there as well. Waterpik is a device that uses a pulsating stream of water to expel bacteria from the gum pockets. It gets up in the gums where your floss can’t get to.

Want an even better tip? Add about a tablespoon of sea salt into your Waterpik. Saltwater is beneficial for healing wounds, infections, and swollen gums.

3. Electric Tooth Brush

Once you try an Electric Tooth Brush you will never go back to a normal toothbrush. First off brushing at night is a must if you want fewer visits to the dentist. Bacteria grows the most at night when you are sleeping. Brushing at night will stop any growth of bacteria and prevent cavities, plaque, and tooth decay.

When brushing with a traditional toothbrush after an electric one will feel like you are just smearing around the brush on your teeth. An electric toothbrush does all the work for you. You can get back in those hard-to-reach areas and really get them cleaned. After brushing with one, my cavities and plaque build-up were significantly reduced and my cleanings at the dentist were a breeze. Huge difference!

4. Mouthwash

I finish all of my oral cleaning with Listerine Total Care Anticavity Fluoride Mouthwash. Again… this isn’t a replacement for all the above, it just wraps up everything you did prior with a good antibacterial wash for that extra protection. Plus it makes your mouth smell great and you’ll never have morning breath when you incorporate mouthwash with, brushing, Waterpik and flossing.

If you do all these steps every night, it will cut down on any bacteria growth and tooth decay and much easier on your bank account when you see the dentist next.

5. Double Cleanse

It is extremely important to remove makeup, dirt, and pollutants that have accumulated on your skin during the day.  A double cleanse will first lift dirt and grime and then will wash it all away, leaving your skin extremely clean but not stripped. This includes a two-step process.

The First Step is to use an oil or a balm cleanser. I recommend a balm for those with dryer skin. I love products like Drunk Elephant Slaai Makeup-Melting Butter Cleanser and Bamboo Booster or my new favorite (and half the price) Clean It Zero Original.

The Second Step is really a lather type of cleansing, with water to get deeper into the pores and wash it all away. Usually, you want a gentle cleanser to do this. I’m in love with Mizon Snail Cushion Foam Bubble Cleanser.

6. Moisturize

Once you have double cleansed, it’s a must to moisturize and prep your skin for any cell turnover while sleeping. This is when your skin can really hydrate and regenerate fresh new skin. These are the products I use (and in this order) that I recommend for healthy beautiful skin.

7. Nasal Flush

I have noticed a huge difference since adding in nasal flushing… meaning I feel like I can now take deep breaths. A nasal flush can thin mucus, curb postnasal drip, and clean bacteria from your nasal passages. It can also wash out allergens you’ve inhaled.

If you haven’t heard of Nasal Flush, it’s when you force water up through one nostril and it comes out the other. You do this with a saline solution to help clear out any bacteria and infections. This isn’t the most pleasant feeling but when you’ve felt like you can breathe, it’s totally worth it!

You can use a Neti Pot or I prefer one that has more of a blast to really clean out the nasal passage. This is the one I bought… Water Flosser Professional Cordless for Teeth. It’s great because it’s rechargeable and has a nasal and teeth attachment all in a cute little carrying case.

8. Hair

It seems like my hair always looks the best just before I’m about to go to bed… ugh! But every night I throw my hair up in a loose bun on the top of my head regardless of how great it looks.

Wearing your hair in a braid, a loose bun, or wrapped with bobby pins, will help you to have less breakage. It also helps distribute the natural oil from your scalp throughout the rest of your hair as you sleep. Oh and make sure you take out whatever clip-in extensions you have! I learned that the hard way with my hair badly breaking… it wasn’t pretty.

Taking Care Of Your Whole Body

These are the 8 steps I do every night before going to bed. I was once told, you want to give special attention to anything from your neck up. Your oral health can affect your overall health, and that means even your cardiovascular health! Crazy that the health of your mouth affects your whole body.

The other tips will just keep you looking younger and more vibrant. So the next time you are about to count your sheep, make sure not to skip the steps that will attribute to a better you.
