For the most part, our hunger cues are pretty detectable. Although there are times when we mistake hunger for actual thirst and a lot of the time those lines are blurred between the two.
Recognizing The Symptoms
We usually know that when we have a headache, fatigue, lightheadedness, and difficulty concentrating, and then our stomach starts to growl… we are hungry. But when our body loses 1-2% of its fluids, we begin to have the same type of symptoms.
A lot of times we don’t drink the amount of water we really need because we get a good amount of our fluids from the foods we eat. This is why we aren’t as focused on quenching our thirst before we become dehydrated.
Where Are You Getting Your Fluids From?
This includes all the times we think we are drinking enough fluids but we aren’t. This is because we aren’t really drinking just straight water… it’s sodas, sports drinks, coffees, and other drinks with high carbohydrate content. These are not the fluids our bodies need to quench our thirst.
We are more intuitive when it comes to eating but this is not the same for drinking fluids. We tend to begin drinking fluids when we have scratchy mouths and throats, chapped dry lips, tiredness, irritability, light-headedness, dizziness, and headaches.
That’s why even when you do drink those types of fluids your body is still craving plain old water. Water in its purest form is what our body needs for survival. To make it plain and simple… you just aren’t getting enough WATER from your daily fluids.

How Much Should You Drink?
The more you weigh the more water you need to drink! I know… it sucks. You feel like you are just drinking water all day long and then running to the bathroom every two seconds.
The research shows that you are supposed to drink half of your weight in ounces. So if you weigh 150lbs… that’s 75oz of water. I recommend starting early in your day so you don’t have to get up multiple times at night.
But also look at your urine… if it’s dark then you are dehydrated, but if it’s clear then you are over-hydrated, which yes is a thing and not a good thing either. A good balance is to have your urine a pale yellow. Then you know Goldie Locks… it’s just right!
So close the fridge and pour yourself some water and see how you feel… You just might quench your hunger.
